- Shadow Brokers
Shadow Brokers first showed their work glimpse in 2013 and they were back in action with their hacking skills in autumn 2016. They put the firewalls of National Security Agency (NSA) under humiliation. Shadow Brokers have been putting out NSA details every now and then questioning the capabilities of the NSA team and their intelligence. Till date, the data exploited from NSA included data from their own network, sensitive information extracted from emails, hacking tools against routers, and comprehensive breakdown of SWIFT banking network.
An outbreak of Petya disrupted the entire Ukrainian business including banks, Kiev’s Boryspil Airport, and energy firms. Victims to this malware ransomware were some of the prestigious companies like Maersk-Danish Based shipping company, Russian oil company-Rosneft, and U.S. based pharmaceutical company Merck. It was found that even after the payment (Bitcoins) was released the victim’s software system were paralyzed with irreversible damages. The entire operation was done to disrupt the working of these multinational companies, hard-hitting mostly on Ukraine, apparently where it all started.
- Cloud Bleed
CloudFlare, one of the World’s largest security company which helps store data of other companies. The clientele list includes OKCupid, FitBit, Uber, and 1Password. A simple code error while updating the system at CloudFlare lead to a bug leaking out all the discreet information from these sites. Cloud Bleed, thus the name indicated bleed all the sensitive data. Before it was brought to noticed, the damage was done. It was ironic when a security data company was fallen to such a blunder.
- Macron Campaign Hack
The French Presidential Campaign was compromised just two days before the election. According to the Presidential candidate, Emmanuel Macron it was a massive hacking attack. Just before closure of campaign, some important documents were released with fake ones to confuse people. About 9GB data was released including campaign data, emails, and financial data. While numerous intelligence agencies pointed Russia for the malpractice, which was denied by the latter.
- Mandarin Oriental Hack
A breach in credit card system of Luxury chain hotel Mandarin was noticed in March 2015. The hotel confirmed the news and issued a statement saying that it was a breach of conduct leading to leaking of credit cards details. With upscale clientele visiting the luxury hotel, it was serious hacking which compromised the sensitive data from the Mandarin. It was also brought to the notice that the hotel was running an older version of Microsoft which was outdated.
- The U.S. Department of Justice hacked 2016
A staff email account was conceded leading to a data breach of 200GB.The Department of Justice (DOJ) was compromised which leads to leaking data of 9,000 employees such as emails id, telephone number, and address. The hacker got easy access to the intranet of the DOJ and later pretended to be a new employee to gain access to further. With lesser screening for the information exchange, this malpractice was performed. The hacker later threatened to leak details of 20,000 FBI employees including the ones which working outside the U.S.
The infamous ransomware which was the highlight of this year malware cyber attack. It was all over the world particularly affecting the British hospitals, public facilities crippling the National Health Department in the United Kingdom. The ransomware created a havoc which delayed medical proceedings. The amount which was extorted was 52 bitcoins summing up to $130,000.
